Butterworts (Pinguicula)
Easy to care for carnivorous plants, with the entire leaf surface being covered with slimy insect-trapping glue. Wonderful plants for catching loads of those pesky gnats, fruit flies, no-see-ums, etc. Most varieties we offer are 'Mexican Pings', which have two distinct types of leaves depending on the season, and seasonal variation in growing conditions. Temperate varieties are good for year-round outdoor growing in temperate areas. All butterworts can be excellent windowsill / terrarium plants, with beautiful flowers too! Most varieties need filtered bright light, medium-high humidity, and pure water. See our Carnivorous Plant Care pages for more detailed information.
Due to the short, fragile nature of the roots of butterwort plants, we ship these with a small wad of Sphagnum moss covering the plant(s). Extra care should be taken when uncovering these plants after shipment. While it a very rare occurrence, if they become dislodged during shipment/unpacking, simply make a small hole in the soil and carefully tuck the roots of the plant into the hole.
PLEASE NOTE that photographs of specific items are for informational purposes only, generally show a mature, flowering-sized plant, and do not represent the actual plant, or even the size of the plant, that you will receive. Most Small Potted butterworts that we offer will be approximately 1/2-inch in diameter, but might be larger or smaller depending on size and type. We do occasionally have Medium/Large Potted, and even Extra-Large Potted, butterworts in stock; if you are wanting a more mature plant, these are the way to go! Also, due to the larger size and fragile nature of our Medium/Large and Extra-Large sized butterworts, we reserve the right to package them separately in a more secure container, and include a pot full of the correct soil for them. We rarely have to do this (usually still sent potted and ready to go), and will use the option that is best for your new babies! Upon arrival, simply make a small hole in the soil, carefully tuck the small roots of the plant in the hole, and carefully tamp the soil down around the base of the plant. A square-ended chopstick works great for this purpose!
