Description
Own a piece of history with this one!
Nepenthes x edinensis
is a Victorian hybrid. It was created during a period in the 19th century known as the "golden age of
Nepenthes
, when nurseries, particularly Veitch Nurseries, were actively hybridizing exotic carnivorous pitcher plants. The full parentage of this complex hybrid is:
Nepenthes [(rafflesiana x hirsuta) x (rafflesiana x ampullaria)] x rafflesiana
. The hybrid was cultivated in the Edinburgh Botanic Gardens by Mr. Lindsay before 1889. This
is one of our favorite complex hybrids of multiple lowland-growing Nepenthes species; and the specific features are stunning! As you might expect with much of the parentage being Nepenthes rafflesiana, this historical masterpiece has large pitchers with bulbous bases and a TON of deep red speckling. Some of the pitchers can be as big around as an orange! Of course, one of the best characteristics of this plant is its ease of growth...due in part to the combination of many parents with differing environmental needs. Get one of these while we even have them...we only have a couple of cuttings available at any one time! All our plants are shipped potted and ready to grow to reduce stress, not bareroot as you find with some other suppliers. Water and enjoy!
